Overview
The FordPass Performance app shows Ford Bronco drivers a variety of off-roading trails across North America. Drivers can view trail details on the mobile app then download the guide to their vehicle interface screen. They can post photos of their experience on the road and provide feedback.
I joined the team when we almost reached MVP. I ran user testing with its target audience. Updated prototype with an onboarding flow and filter trails feature. Worked with development to transform designs into an interactive platform.
Challenge
Since this is a new app and not a redesign we had a few challenges. Our team had to find a way to show users how the app works and who this is made for.
We wanted to help users find specific trails based on location, difficulty, and trail length. We also had to make sure users can access the app even without a wi-fi connection.
Goal
Create a platform that makes it easy for users to discover and drive through trails while building an off-roading community of Ford Bronco drivers.
User Testing
We conducted 8 user interviews through video call. Testers owned a newer Ford Bronco vehicle and had some off-roading experience. During these interviews we asked the following questions:
1. How much off-roading experience do you have?
2. How did you get into off-roading?
3. What off-roading resources (apps, websites, books, etc.) do you use?
4. Will the app be useful to its target audience (beginner off-roaders)?
5. When the user first visits the app what would they like to see?
6. What details would you like to know about a trail before driving?
7. Is the app easy to use?
Users are then asked to view the InVison prototype on their phone. We ask them questions about their feelings towards the app prototype and if it is something they would use. We then ask what they would like to see more from an off-roading app.
Filter Trails
We added filters to help users view specific trails by difficulty, distance, and trail length. I worked on creating the user flow and user interface for the trail filters.
Development:
Once the prototype was updated we sent the designs to our development team. Due to the limitations of the InVision prototype there were a lot of questions involving the interaction design. We had weekly meetings to cover any questions involving interaction effects and animations.
Results
I learned a lot about collaborating with a large development team as well as designing for vehicle interface screens. If I was on this project for longer I would look into updating the onboarding flow to help users understand the app’s concept in a shorter amount of time.
